What this tool does and does not do
This tool estimates risk-rule values from the numbers you enter. It does not connect to your trading account, execute trades, guarantee compliance, predict challenge success or replace your firm’s official dashboard.
Important Notes:
- Current Profit refers to the total profit made during the current consistency calculation period.
- Today P&L should include or exclude open P&L depending on the specific rules of your chosen prop firm.
- These formulas are generic estimates. Always verify your risk parameters against your prop firm's official rules and dashboard. For full calculation details, see our Methodology.
Navigating Apex Trader Funding Drawdowns
Apex Trader Funding offers an accessible entry point to futures prop trading, but requires mastery of their Intraday Trailing Drawdown model. This trailing threshold moves in real time based on your highest open, unrealized equity. It is the most aggressive form of risk management used by prop firms and requires a specific defensive trading strategy.
How the Intraday Trailing Rule Works
Unlike EOD drawdowns which evaluate at the close of the session, an Intraday Trailing Drawdown calculates tick-by-tick. If you are in a trade and it goes up $1,000 in open profit, your drawdown threshold immediately moves up $1,000. It never moves down. If that trade reverses and you close it for a $0 break-even, you have effectively lost $1,000 of your drawdown buffer.
| Account Size | Max Drawdown |
|---|---|
| $25,000 | $1,000 |
| $50,000 | $2,000 |
| $100,000 | $3,000 |
| $150,000 | $4,000 |
Evaluation vs Intraday Performance Account
When using the calculator, select your correct Account Stage:
1. Evaluation Stage: The goal is purely to hit the profit target without hitting the trailing drawdown. There is no daily loss limit and no consistency rule.
2. Intraday Performance Account: Once funded, you must now adhere to the 50% consistency rule to receive payouts. Your best day cannot account for more than 50% of your total profit. Additionally, a Daily Loss limit may be applied depending on your specific scaling tier.
Worked Numerical Example: Intraday Trailing
Assume you have an Apex 50K Evaluation. The Max Drawdown is $2,000.
- Start: Balance is $50,000. Trailing threshold is $48,000.
- Trade 1 Open: You enter a trade. It goes into $1,000 profit. Your highest equity is now $51,000. Your trailing threshold instantly moves to $49,000 ($51,000 - $2,000).
- Trade 1 Reverses: The trade reverses and you close it for $0 profit. Your balance remains $50,000.
- Result: Your trailing threshold is permanently locked at $49,000. You now only have $1,000 of available drawdown buffer, despite taking no actual losses.
Common Mistakes
- Runner Strategies: Letting "runners" go without moving stops. If a runner gains large open profit and reverses, it will eat your entire drawdown buffer.
- Overleveraging near the threshold: If your threshold reaches $50,100 (once it stops moving), and you risk $500, a single loss can blow the account.
- Ignoring the 50% rule on Performance accounts: Having a massive $3,000 day on a Performance account means you now need to generate an equal amount in smaller, consistent profit days just to request a payout.
FAQ
Does the Apex trailing drawdown ever stop moving?
Yes. The intraday trailing drawdown stops trailing upward once your threshold level reaches your initial account balance plus $100. (e.g., $50,100 on a 50K account).
What is the consistency rule on Apex Performance Accounts?
On Performance accounts, your best trading day cannot make up more than 50% of your total profit when you request a payout.
Are there daily loss limits on Apex?
Evaluation accounts do not have a Daily Loss Limit. However, Performance accounts may enforce a Daily Loss Limit depending on your scaling tier.
Do all Apex accounts use Intraday Trailing?
No. While Intraday Trailing is standard, Apex rules can change and they occasionally offer different structures like Static accounts. Always verify your exact account type.
How should I trade intraday trailing drawdowns?
Use strict take-profits, trail your stops aggressively to lock in open equity, and avoid holding through large pullbacks.
