What this tool does and does not do
This tool estimates risk-rule values from the numbers you enter. It does not connect to your trading account, execute trades, guarantee compliance, predict challenge success or replace your firm’s official dashboard.
Important Notes:
- Current Profit refers to the total profit made during the current consistency calculation period.
- Today P&L should include or exclude open P&L depending on the specific rules of your chosen prop firm.
- These formulas are generic estimates. Always verify your risk parameters against your prop firm's official rules and dashboard. For full calculation details, see our Methodology.
Topstep Risk Management & Daily Loss Limits
Topstep is a premier futures prop trading firm known for its End-of-Day (EOD) drawdown model. Unlike intraday trailing drawdowns that track unrealized profit, Topstep evaluates your maximum drawdown based on your realized balance at the end of the trading session. However, to manage intraday risk, they utilize a Daily Loss Limit (DLL).
How the Topstep Rules Work
The two main pillars of Topstep risk management are the Daily Loss Limit (a soft breach) and the Maximum Loss Limit (a hard breach). These rules change depending on your account stage, making it vital to select the correct stage in the calculator.
| Rule | Calculation Method | Consequence of Breach |
|---|---|---|
| Daily Loss Limit | Real-time open equity against daily starting balance. Includes fees. | Soft Breach. Account is locked for the day, but you keep the account. |
| Maximum Loss Limit | EOD Trailing (Calculated at the end of day using realized balance). | Hard Breach. The account is liquidated and failed. |
| Consistency Rule | Your best day cannot exceed a certain % of total profit (e.g., 50% or 40%). | Prevents passing the combine or delays your payout eligibility. |
Account Stage Explanations
Topstep enforces different rules depending on your specific account stage:
- Trading Combine: The evaluation phase. You must adhere to the Max Loss and a 50% consistency rule. The Daily Loss Limit is often optional depending on your setup.
- Express Funded Standard: The first funded stage. No consistency rule applies here, but the Maximum Loss is enforced.
- Express Funded Consistency: An alternative funded path where a 40% payout consistency rule is enforced to ensure steady trading behavior.
- Live Funded: A fully live brokerage account. The Daily Loss Limit is strictly applied here, along with the max loss.
Worked Numerical Example: The EOD Drawdown
Assume you have a $50,000 Topstep Combine. The Maximum Loss Limit is $2,000.
- Day 1 Open: Balance is $50,000. Your Max Loss threshold is $48,000.
- Intraday High: You are up $1,500 in open trades, but you close the day up only $500.
- Day 1 Close: Your ending balance is $50,500.
- Day 2 Open: Your Max Loss threshold trails up behind your new EOD balance ($50,500 - $2,000 = $48,500). Notice that the intraday high ($51,500) did not affect the threshold; only the $50,500 EOD balance did.
Common Mistakes
- Ignoring Consistency: Many traders hit their profit target on day one of the Trading Combine, but because of the 50% consistency rule, they cannot pass until they generate more profit on subsequent days to dilute that massive first day.
- Forgetting Commissions in DLL: The Daily Loss Limit is calculated using net P&L. If your DLL is $1,000 and you have taken $100 in commissions, your actual trade loss limit is only $900.
FAQ
What happens if I hit the Daily Loss Limit?
On a Combine, hitting the DLL usually locks you out of trading for the remainder of the session. You do not lose the account; you can resume trading the next day.
Does Topstep's Max Loss trail intraday?
No. Topstep calculates the Maximum Loss Limit based on the End-of-Day (EOD) realized balance, not intraday open equity.
When does the Topstep EOD drawdown stop moving?
Once your EOD trailing drawdown threshold reaches your initial starting balance, it locks into place and no longer trails upward.
Is the Daily Loss Limit optional?
Depending on Topstep's current promotions or account setups, the DLL may be disabled during the Trading Combine, but it is typically strictly enforced in the Live Funded phase.
What is the consistency rule on Topstep?
In the Combine, your best day cannot account for more than 50% of your total profit. In the Express Consistency path, a 40% rule applies to payouts.
