What this tool does and does not do

This tool estimates risk-rule values from the numbers you enter. It does not connect to your trading account, execute trades, guarantee compliance, predict challenge success or replace your firm’s official dashboard.

Important Notes:

  • Current Profit refers to the total profit made during the current consistency calculation period.
  • Today P&L should include or exclude open P&L depending on the specific rules of your chosen prop firm.
  • These formulas are generic estimates. Always verify your risk parameters against your prop firm's official rules and dashboard. For full calculation details, see our Methodology.

Mastering the FTMO Challenge

The FTMO Challenge is the industry standard for forex prop trading, evaluating a trader's discipline and risk management over a one-step or two-step evaluation process. Understanding the exact mechanics of these rules is the difference between achieving funding and losing your evaluation fee.

Understanding Challenge Types (1-Step vs 2-Step)

You must choose the correct framework for your strategy.

  • FTMO 2-Step: The traditional evaluation. Phase 1 requires a 10% profit target (Phase 2 is 5%) with a 5% daily loss and a 10% static maximum loss. It does not enforce a generic percentage-based consistency rule.
  • FTMO 1-Step: A faster path that features a 10% profit target, a tighter 3% maximum daily loss, and a 10% EOD Trailing maximum loss. It also enforces a 50% Best Day rule to ensure consistency.

How the FTMO Drawdown Rules Work

FTMO relies on two primary risk guardrails: the Maximum Daily Loss and the Maximum Overall Loss. The mechanics differ between the 1-Step and 2-Step challenges.

Profit Target10%10% (Phase 1) / 5% (Phase 2)
Maximum Daily Loss3% of Initial Balance5% of Initial Balance
Maximum Loss10% (EOD Trailing)10% (Static)
Consistency Rule50% Best Day RuleN/A

Worked Numerical Example: The 5% Daily Loss (2-Step)

Assume you have a $100,000 FTMO 2-Step Challenge. Your standard Maximum Daily Loss is $5,000 (5%).

  • Scenario A: You start the day at $100,000. Your daily loss limit breaches if your equity drops to $95,000.
  • Scenario B: You made $3,000 yesterday, so your midnight starting balance is $103,000. Your new daily loss limit is calculated as $103,000 - $5,000 = $98,000. You cannot drop below $98,000 today.
  • Scenario C: You lost $2,000 yesterday, so your midnight balance is $98,000. Your daily loss allowance is still $5,000, meaning you cannot drop below $93,000 today. However, your Maximum Overall Loss limit is $90,000, so you still have room before hitting the hard breach.

Common Mistakes

  1. Ignoring Swaps and Commissions: The FTMO daily loss calculates total equity, which includes the cost of entering a trade and holding it overnight. If your stop loss is exactly at the limit, the addition of commissions will cause a breach.
  2. Holding Through Midnight CE(S)T: If you hold a losing trade over the midnight rollover, the loss becomes realized in your new daily balance calculation, changing your breach threshold for the next day.
  3. Misunderstanding EOD Trailing vs Static: On the 1-Step, the 10% maximum loss trails from your end-of-day balance. On the 2-Step, it is permanently locked at 10% below your initial starting balance.

FAQ

Does the FTMO max loss trail?

It depends. On the FTMO 2-Step, the 10% max loss is entirely static based on your initial account size. On the FTMO 1-Step, the max loss is an EOD Trailing drawdown.

What happens if I pass the daily loss but my trade bounces back?

A breach is a hard breach. If your open equity touches the daily loss limit at any exact moment (including the spread), the account is failed, even if the trade eventually closes in profit.

Does FTMO have a consistency rule?

The FTMO 1-Step enforces a 50% Best Day Rule. The FTMO 2-Step does not enforce a generic percentage-based consistency rule.

How are commissions handled?

All commissions and swaps are deducted from your equity in real-time and count directly against your daily and maximum loss limits.

When does the daily loss reset?

The daily loss limit resets exactly at midnight Central European (Summer) Time (CE(S)T).
